To keep your air conditioning system working properly be sure to get a preseason checkup. The benefits of a checkup usually outweigh the costs because a properly functioning system will be more efficient. That means lower utility expenses and less wear and tear on your equipment. A good technician will check the following:

  1. Check the filter. This should be done regularly by the homeowner but if your technician doesn’t do it, they are not giving you a proper checkup.
  2. Check the compressor starting AMP draw and running AMPS
  3. Verify the temperature drop, typically 15 to 20 degrees, between the air entering the evaporator coil from the room and the air leaving the coil.
  4. Look at the thermostat. It may need calibrated.
  5. Check the contactor’s. If they have worn or pitted points replace them.
  6. Check the capacitors. The microfarads’ on all capacitors should be checked.
  7. Check the duct system for air leaks.
  8. Check the refrigerant. Pressures should be checked to be sure that the system is correctly charged.
  9. Check the AMP draw on the blower motor.
  10. Check the AMP draw on the condenser motor
  11. Check condensate drain. Look for cracking, debris or bacteria growth in the line.
  12. Examine the emergency drain pan. Look for rust or other signs of a problem.
  13. Check electrical connections.
  14. Lubricate the motors when possible. Newer motors are normally sealed.
  15. Check fan relay.
  16. Examine the disconnect box.
  17. Check safety controls.

Having a qualified Atlanta air conditioning technician give your system a preseason checkup can greatly reduce the chance of a mid summer breakdown. Call your air conditioning professional today to schedule an appointment.
